Can you teach yourself belly dancing at home?

I’d like to learn a little myself since I can’t afford lessons quite yet. Is belly dancing one of those things you can teach yourself or do you really need an instructor?

yes, you can rent dvd’s from netflix or blockbuster or even go on youtube for free.

Its fun. good luck

If you can’t naturally move your hips, it can be hard to pick up. But if you’re already loose in that area, there are lots of good DVD’s to choose from.

Belly dancing is one of the best dance styles to learn at home because the movements are fairly natural, so you’re not going to injure yourself if you’re doing it wrong (unlike ballet or contemporary).

    Good luck!

I don’t know if you get it, but theres a channel on TV called FitTV. On said channel, usually at 8 or 9 pm theres a show on called "Shimmy" that is great to watch and learn from. Its breaks moves down very nicely and is good to learn from.
Otherwise, Youtube is probably your best bet.

Don’t give up, there are plenty of us who have taught ourselves to dance by ourselves.

There are several instructional DVDs for belly dancing that can get you in shape and help you build the muscles required for those oh-so-intense isolations and undulations. They are a great way to learn because they often provide many views, and you can stop and rewind as many times as you need to in order to learn the moves. You can go to Youtube.com and watch alot of them (I’ve done this alot!) instead of actually buying the DVDs so you dont have to waste the money. ;D Try these:

(Find parts 2-4 in the "related videos" bar)

Rania is a great teacher. :)
    Also, try the Goddess Workout:

(You can find all the other parts in the "Related Videos" bar for this as well)

You could also download the Luscious Bellydance Workout (or buy it), which is also awesome. I used this one for quite a while to get in shape. It helps alot when youre just starting out.

Since we all cant afford (or dont have access to) bellydance teachers, I think these are great alternatives. You can learn alot from them. Hope this helps. :)
