How does belly dancing fit in with conservative Muslim culture?

I’m just curious about this. Belly dancing is Middle Eastern in origin, but how does it fit in with conservative Islam, like with women covering their head and everything?

Is bellydancing a pre-Islamic art? Is it just practiced among more liberal Muslims? Or it is practiced by mostly Christians in the Middle East and not Muslims?

HEY :)
Just to clarify a muslim women can do any kind of dance or sports she wishes to, but like the game there’s rules, even in conservative muslim countries. as you know women from all parts of the world are involved in some physical game to please men such as pole dancing in the west, can can in europe, booty shakin in africa, geisha girls in asia and of course belly dancing in the middle east. In libreal muslim countries like bahrain, turkey n the UAE………..yep women belly dance librally, and in the red districts, even more erotically. In a more conservative muslim country like saudi or iraq, muslims women do actually belly dance, but there is a time and place. If in a function such as a wedding or a party it is tolerated. If women are dancing in the rooms and no men are present, then yea. but in public its a big no no.

Hope the helps :)

It’s one of the few sexual outlets that keep the rest of the muslims in the Middle East from blowing themselves up.

It’s just Arabic Culture. Has nothing to do with Islaam. Arabs have their own soap operas, they belly dance, they smoke, and do all sorts of garbage as well. Arabs do not equal Muslims, even though Islaam enriched Arab culture tremendously in the good ways. Yet Egyptians still pride their selves in gold, Syrians pride themselves in family lineage, and Saudis still pride themselves in family status. It’s all Pre-Islamic notions. And the same goes on for the East Asians (Indians, Pakis, etc.)
